Boots standing with American flags filled the baseball diamond at Barnes Memorial Park. Behind home plate, another large flag rippled in the morning breeze.
Groups of people in a mix of running attire, matching team shirts, and military uniforms, stood solemnly as the names of those in the military who had lost their lives since Sept. 11, 2001, were read aloud, accompanied by a bell toll.
First announced in 2012, the Massachusetts Run for The Fallen is an annual recognition of the memories of those who gave their lives for their country since the start of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Held this past Saturday, the event brought out military families, Gold Star families, public officials, current members of the military, and veterans, among others, to honor the lives the fallen.
At Barnes Memorial Field, many American flags were displayed, including one hanging from a Dedham Fire Truck near the start of the run. The remembrance kicked off with a ceremony honoring those who had fallen, attended by the Dedham Board of Selectmen, State Rep. Paul McMurtry, and Gov. Charlie Baker. After the run and walking portion completed, participants were invited to reconvene for a barbeque and entertainment, including an appearance by The Green Monster, raffle prizes, and drills from the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC).
